From June 20 to 22 (Friday-Sunday), the Tenrikyo Boys and Girls Association held the "Camp of Joy 2025" at the Malibu Creek State Park campground. There were over forty participants, including a healthy contingent of adults and staff members to support the kids as they enjoyed the three days of camping in the Southern California sun.
The first night's dinner involved a curry-cooking competition among the three groups of kids. They each did an admirable job of creating their own interpretation of Japanese curry rice, although one group outdid itself by adding a little too much of their "secret ingredient." On the second day, the group went hiking in the nearby hills. A highlight of this hike was when one of the kids cast his fishing pole into the pond and immediately caught an 18-inch carp. While the fish was released right away, the group became quite excited when they first saw the fish being raised from the water. In the afternoon, the group went to the nearby Malibu Lagoon State Beach. In the evening, a campfire event featured skits from the kids groups as well as an impromptu skit and song routine from the adults.
Overall, everyone had a great time and experienced first hand the joys of being close to nature.
