A newly translated edition of The Anecdotes of Oyasama was published by Doyusha on April 18, 2026. This edition is a completely new translation. The first translation was published in 1977, and the fully revised version drew upon the insights provided in that translation while giving expression to Oyasama’s parental heart in a way that felt natural to contemporary English speakers.

The new translation can be distinguished from the previous one by the phrase, “Manuscript Edition,” which is printed on the book’s cover and spine.

The project to fully revise the translation began in 2018, following the thirst for new translations that grew from the project to translate the manga rendition of The Life of Oyasama. That project culminated in the publication of The Tale of Oyasama, volumes 1 through 3, in 2016 through 2028. The translation project for The Anecdotes of Oyasama was spearheaded by the Translation Committees of the Mission Headquarters in America and of the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii under the guidance of the Translation Section of the Tenrikyo Church Headquarters. Almost thirty translators from the two dioceses participated in the project, with each translator providing their translation for a number of stories within The Anecdotes. Their draft was then reviewed during the Translation Conference that involved members of the Translation Section. The final draft was then carefully examined at Jiba.

The Anecdotes of Oyasama was originally compiled with the intent to “vividly portray Oyasama as the Parent of the Divine Model—revealing Her as the One who embraces all humanity with overflowing parental love, thereby allowing us to feel Her living presence as if She were right before our eyes.” It is the hope of the translators that the new rendition would aid in realizing this goal for English readers throughout the world.
